This might be confusing for younger readers. See, there used to be these devices called pencils. You'd hold the pencil in your hand and move it on paper and that's how people used to write and draw. If you made a mistake, you'd use an eraser to make your pencil mark disappear. But for people who used pencils and erasers in a professional setting, one could (apparently!) use an electric eraser. How curious.
