Thorough instructions: What To Do If You Have Lost Your Cat

One out of every 5 pets becomes lost at some point in their lives. If you have lost a cat, try the following:

-Search your area thoroughly as soon as possible. Check bushes, under decks and vehicles, around garages, other structures, in garbage bins, garages/sheds.

-Ask neighbors, children, mail carrier, newspaper person to watch for your pet.

-File report at Regina Humane Society (543-6363). Visit shelters frequently. Shelters are busy - supplying description may not be enough. Also, people describe animals differently and your cat could be overlooked.

-Leave cat's favourite food in dish outside or or something with cat's scent on it, such as a blanket, pet cushion or favourite toy. Animals have a strong sense of smell and they can smell it from a distance. Cats may return on their own - having food or something familiar encourages them to stick around. -Update contact info for license, tattoo and microchip if required, especially important if you moved or changed phone number since getting them!

-Post cat's information on-line at 'Petlynx' - an online database of lost/found pets (www.petlynx.net), on 'Regina's Lost and Found Cats' Facebook, at People For Animals (Saskatchewan) 'Lost and Found' at: people4animals.ca. Post lost notices on community websites. - Offering a REWARD for safe return of your cat encourages people to keep an eye out!

-Place Leader Post lost classified ad - the longer the better. Check daily Found ads. Canvas area with posters with picture, description, contact info. With permission, place posters at local stores, libraries, pet supply shops, veterinary offices. DON'T GIVE UP! Please ID your cat! Even indoor cats can escape. By giving your cat permanent identification like a tattoo or microchip and a tag with contact info, you dramatically increase having your cat found/returned.
