What caught my eye on this ad was how its title sort of implied that the art was maybe a rare find. An Original Shannon Gauthier? Tell me more. And then the next line is "My name is Shannon..."
But hey, fake it 'til you make it, they say. And in all seriousness, kudos to anyone trying to work in a self-employed way.
By the way, this blog post is an original Michael Bell.
Shannon writes: "My name is Shannon.I am a Saskatoon based artist.I am a mother of 4 who decided to give up working to paint. So far it's been good:)I am thankful for all the support I have gotten and hope that 2011 is another great year!I don't just paint for the money(although I do consider it my job).I've been painting for the last 8 years(since I quit drinking and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and ocd),I find it really helps me cope with the everyday challenges I face.I try not to look at my mental illness as a bad thing.Instead,I use it to express myself through painting.I have sold hundreds of my original paintings to people all across Canada. If you are interested in viewing/purchasing some of my art, feel free to call me anytime at 652-5375."
Update: I was contacted by Shannon recently, who wasn't too pleased by my comment of "fake it 'til you make it." I meant that phrase with positive intentions, in the sense that being self-employed and an artist is hard and that perseverance is important, no matter what anyone else says. Artists that I know use the phrase "fake it 'til you make it" all the time. So I certainly didn't intend to offend. (I am also partially self-employed, so I'm not insensitive to the challenges of working from home.)
